I haven’t been updating my blog very frequently and I am beginning to feel that I am having less and less to say these days.
There used to be a time when, as I recall, I would be able to write hours on end about a wide range of things – from anything to anything. I had an opinion (still do) on everything and I could go on and on forever about that movie, this restaurant, that book, or that latest world event.
Recently I don’t feel the dire urge to voice my opinions as much. We’ve become too opinionated, we of the middle class born in the early 80s and have had the luxury of education and exposure to the internet in our early years. We have a say on everything and nothing is perfect as is… it could always be better if only this or that.
Couple this with the vast ocean of digital information… the internet… and you’ll find enough opinions out there about anything and everything. Why bother sharing your own? Is it so essential for us humans to share our thoughts with others to feel that we are important and exist? I know that we are a social animal… and external recognition results in an internal reward of personal satisfaction… but my question of late is Why does it have to be so. Why should one rely on others for anything, let alone something as important as self-worth and esteem.
So it seems as a sign of maturity perhaps that I have lost my appetite for critiquing, commenting, complaining, and most of all thinking about and sharing things that are not very important. My brain has had it with wasted energy and thoughts on things that are of no tangible significance. There’s just too much out there for me to handle.
I am not supposed to know about the little child in Indonesia who is starving. I am not supposed to know about the whales being hunted illegally in the Caribbean. There are some things that I just do not need to know. Not because I am selfish. Not because I am careless. But just because technology in our time enables the whole world to be connected… does not mean I need to be. There was a time when what concerned an individual was his immediate surrounding – that which he could see with his eyes. With language evolving and methods of transportation being devised, that circle grew larger. And for any middle class person living in a modern city, that circle now encompasses the entire globe. We even know what happens on Mars for crying out loud.
For me… it’s beginning to become a tad overwhelming. And just as through Ramadan we fast from food and water to reinvigorate our bodies and organs… I believe i need to do some fasting of a different nature and reduce my daily intake of information and limit it to only things that really really concern me. I want to be selfish and protective of the information that I digest.
Shhh…at least for a while.

Information Overload. Too many people, too much noise. It’s why I brought my blog down a while ago, and sometimes, you just need a break. The good news is, after taking a break you can always come back with a new approach, one that filters out the unnecessary and keeps you focused on what serves you. Now take a break and focus on those 2atayef.
Good advice… will do
Those little fried delights are just amazing aren’t they?
been there too, I called it my “online existential crisis”
I think I battle with this on the daily..”Who cares what I think? Why am I wasting my time?” But then I think of my family who enjoys reading what I’m up to..honestly they are my main motivation. A smile comes to my face every time I get an email from my mother or my grandfather telling me how proud they are of all that I”m doing, seeing, and learning..perhaps you need to re-evaluate your purpose, find new inspiration..or maybe you’re doing what you need to do..taking a break from it all..But I’ll be waiting for you to come back!
You’re right .. very well said khaled.
